From the point of view of getting through lunchtime in relative tranquillity, I'm sure you did the right thing!

From the wider perspective, though, it perhaps might not hurt if just one or two of your colleague's assumptions were questioned.

I'm assuming that your co-worker's comments were inspired by Sitchin? You might be interested in this discussion of Sitchin's views on the Nephilim (it's from the site to which I linked in a previous post); if you scroll down to the end, you will see that Heiser argues that Sitchin has based his theories on incorrect translations of ancient terminology; some of the complications of this terminology is briefly described in Wiki.

This in itself would probably do nothing whatsoever to change your colleague's views. But you might at least have succeeded in planting a tiny seed of doubt; he might eventually come to see that it might not be a bad thing at least to question and examine the basis of the theories that he has accepted.
