Similarly, geologists and other researchers have proposed
that "Time of Darkness" native oral traditions in New
Guinea to past volcanic eruptions and the "The Thunderbird
and Whale stories of Native Americans of the Pacific
Northwest to earthquake and/or tsunamis.

The only problem is that the specific detail needed to
form a testable hypothesis is often, but not always,
lacking in native oral traditions. Although a person,
can find similarities to suggest that a specific event
is the basis for a specific oral tradition, there is
often not the information available to test whether it
might be "true" or not.

Many times, we are left with state that although something
is possible, it is not provable / testable at this time
and we are left with fun, but ultimately frustrating,
speculation.

An interesting book is:

Blong, R. J., 1982. The Time of Darkness: Local legends
and volcanic reality in Papua New Guinea. University
of Washington Press: Seattle.
