Of course they removed the waste dirt around the evidence or else you couldn't see it. But neither the site's in situ evidence or the witness columns were destroyed:

They don't need to replicate anything because the "pristine" evidence was not dug up or "destroyed".

Which means the recreation of the upright tusk at the San Diego museum is "gone, destroyed" and "not replicatable"? Thank you for pointing that out. Maybe next time they will have the common sense to leave the evidence in situ and remove the entire block in place as it was done here:
