I think that there's more to the history of measurements than this might suggest; the English foot may have a much more ancient origin than commonly supposed ("A Metrological Investigation," Peter Kidson, Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, Vol. 53 (1990), pp. 71-97).
