Pete ,

The stone flaking off in the right hand corner. That isn't falling off because of water grinding it off .

What caused it ?

It's probably just salt , atmospheric moisture and extreme temperature variation from the night/day cycle . Softer stone , fissures and sediment filled cracks hold more moisture (salts) and erode quicker from the wild temperature swings .

Ya ,water might wash it off, but the root cause is not flooding . Flooding just removes the surface sand which acts as insulation and exposes the fissures and channels to the above mentioned corrosive elements . Constant exposure equals constant and greater erosion from surface flaking. People are acting like water with sand and rocks in it is the main cause , grinding good stone into dust, but wind can expose it just the same . The exposure and not the rain fall rate would be the key factor making constant or even frequent rain unnecessary .

The water table is so high on the plateau that the stone is always moist through capillary action. So a source of corrosive moisture is ALWAYS present . Another reason rain isn't necessary .
