I'm suggesting rain isn't NECESSARY because cracks in the limestone allow for weathering from other mechanisms such as efflorescence , high nighttime humidity and huge day/night temperature swings . These vertical cracks from earthquakes(?) take on a rounded appearance because they are weathering from two sides. Your picture could be an example of that.

La resistance . I also don't care for the whole '10kB.C. Sphinx' theory which is based on rainfall .

I don't remember saying that. Of course flooding affects it . How much and to what degree it is a facilitator or an agent in the erosion process is the question .

Is there water pouring over that edge on a regular basis ? You can see the surface flaking right there in your own picture . Just pointing out the obvious .

Are there vertical fissures on the Sphinx ? Or for that matter any other outcropping unaffected by flooding ? How'd they get there ? Are the more heavily eroded walls of the sphinx enclosure in the sun more ? I don't hear these questions being asked .
