Interesting find, and though you state the research is incomplete, the paper is well done.

I have been on expedition in the western desert into north Sudan near Gebel Uwaynet, along the way through these parts we often stopped to cool the engines and rest. It generally occurred when ever we stoped a simple 30-40 meter walk from the vehicles towards rock outcrops slightly elevated we found remains of stone napping and the occasional discarded arrow head. we surmised these were locations used by hunters during wet times say late paleo-lithic early neo-lithic period, when the desert resembled more to a savannah.

Most outcrops exposed to the elements were weathered by blowing sand and much like in your photographs they were somewhat polished by the effect.

I'm wondering if the stones used for the circle are local? did you find the same type in and around the wadi's near? could you tell if they were the remnants of larger stones decayed by wind and sand?

Clearly the circle is man made, especially when the measurement is weighed in. Without excavation it's impossible to determine how far down the base of the wall is, and perhaps if any significant artifacts remain there. It poses many interesting questions, it may have been a weigh-station or a camp, it's anyones guess without more field work. Also it reminds me of the elaborate system Petrie thought up on how you could align the night sky and use stars for alignment and navigation, it would be interesting to find out if the alignment of the cairn's and other features along the wall align with anything astrophysical.

Best,
