Wainright’s tunnel at the Meidum
Pyramid shows how the builders took care to scrape down and anchor the step pyramid onto the natural rock: only the later casing phase was founded on a platform on the desert surface, with the steps of the tower carrying most of the load of the casing.

Interesting. A pavement wouldn't have to support much weight of the casing stone.

I'm also struck by the comment that it is hot inside the Bent Pyramid (at least at times). I'm surprised there's sufficient air flow to allow it to heat up in the long summers. I have heard reports that there is an unknown source of air movement and believe it would be an interesting study to determine its sources using barometric pressure recording devices.
