The Heb Sed - with Reference to Dr Dave’s New Book

I would like to comment on some ideas in the chapter ‘Before the Great Pyramid’ and the interpretation of them in the later ‘Description of the Great Pyramid’.

On page 20 we read :
“Reliefs representing the Heb Sed rituals were most likely prominent in most, if not all, of the pyramids of the Old Kingdom.”

On page 30 regarding the Step Pyramid complex at Saqqara we read :
“it seems the whole complex , above and below, was intended to represent or be used for this one (Heb Sed) ritual. Either in reality or symbolically in the afterlife ” and ”stars on the ceilings of the burial chambers of the step Pyramid complex suggest that the underground chambers were also associated with the heavens above” and ”These scenes thus represent the rites that Djoser had to carry out for eternity, in the world of the afterlife , above in the sky and below on the ground”.

As the Great Pyramid follows the legacy of the first pyramid, The Step Pyramid, the reader might expect some new related interpretations in the book about the purpose of the GP, in line with its Heb Sed inheritance. Sadly these are absent.

Coming back to the Step Pyramid for a moment, on page 55 the six Heb Sed run panels alongside the tombs were printed. Three were from the corridor running north-south alongside the pyramid burial chamber and three from the corridor running north-south alongside the South Tomb burial chamber.

About these corridors, this paragraph on page 33 is intriguing :
“Analysis of a survey of the monument by American Egyptologist Florence Friedman has demonstrated that these two short corridors are actually aligned with each other despite the fact they are almost 200m apart. Furthermore, in the last decade a Latvian expedition has detected evidence of a previously unknown corridor that seems to link the subterranean complex in the north to the small subterranean complex in the south tomb”

The reliefs clearly show symbols for the two halves of the sky, which we can assume are the northern half and the southern half.

They also show symbols of three end markers at each corner of the panel underneath the half sky symbols.

So we can infer that the afterlife Heb Sed run took place underground between the two tombs. One end represented the northern half of the sky and the other end the southern half of the sky.

In addition I will propose that the sky markers for the ends of the run across the heavens represent Orion’s belt in the south and the circumpolar stars in the north.

Now regarding the description of the Great Pyramid, there are hardly any mentions at all of the Heb Sed rituals.

Here is one though from page 59:
“According to David Lightbody the ritual concept (Heb Sed) may throw some light on the star/air shafts. The pharaoh’s primary ritual function was to unify and lay claim to the two regions of Egypt, both in the celestial realm above and on earth below. It is therefore notable that the star shafts lead out from the burial chamber towards the two skies, due north and due south. He suggests that the shafts may have had some connection with territorial ideology. The shafts could have provided avenues through which the pharaoh’s soul could rise to the extents of the northern and southern skies.”

While this sounds right it does not link properly with earlier comments above about the Step Pyramid.

The starry skies in the Step Pyramid were IN the tombs where the Sed run took place. So it is more likely that the Kings Chamber shafts of the GP brought the sky markers DOWN into the chamber.

And the angles of the shafts suggest that the sky markers were Orion’s Belt in the southern sky and the Kocab-Thuban-Mizar asterism in the northern sky.

While I can understand that the book The Great Pyramid tries not to stray far from orthodox interpretations, I think the evidence discussed in the introduction chapters was ignored when it came to explaining the shafts and other parts of the Great Pyramid.
