One of us is gone - RIP Kenuchelover
Posted by: Doug Weller (IP Logged)
Date: January 26, 2007 08:14AM

It is with very deep regret that I must pass on a message from Giselle Horvat which she received from Tammy Wofford, the wife of Wade Wofford (Kenuchelover).

He died of a heart attack on November 24th last year. He was in 43 and in good health at the time.

He will be sorely missed.

I've posted this here instead of the coffee shop to make sure everyone who knew him sees it.

Oh no. That's terrible. He will indeed be greatly missed with his strong opinions
and knowledge of Native American issues. I was surprised and a little worried by
his sudden silence but I never dreamed that he was gone.

Just yesterday I was wondering what it would be like if a major poster on the board passed away. How would we know. Who would break the news.

I never dreamed it would be Kenuchelover. Never in a million years. I so enjoyed his perspectives; his knowledge; his sense of humor. Our community is diminished by his absence. There is no doubt about that. My sympathies and condolences go out to his family and close friends. I regret having never met him in person.

Thank you, Doug, for bringing this to our attention.

I am totally shocked and saddened. He was one of my favorite posters and a veritable fountain of informed and documented information. The level of discourse on this board will be greatly diminished by his absence. I, too, was wondering why he was not posting, but I had noted that he would absent himself for a while periodically.

My deepest condolences to his family. A sad day for all of us

I have been trying to find words for some time now, but shocked is the right one.

Since my own health problems started a couple of years ago and I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I have been very worried about some peoples long absence from the board, like yours Bernard and Pete Clarke's. But although I'm not yet in my thirties, I did not see this happening to someone so young. (I think Pete is even younger, but he has shared his health problems with us.)

I wish all the best for his family, although I know it unfortunately won't make much of a difference. sad smiley

Tommi

P.S. I apologize for the somewhat selfish point of view in this post. This is just how I feel, and it's not really something I can hide.

That is shocking, and only 43 years old!

Wade had been absent from the board all summer, probably over working getting moved to Oklahoma, setting up a house and of course getting his heritage corn varieties planted and harvested. He checked in briefly in mid November and then was uncharacteristically silent.

We shared a lot of common interests and he will be missed. He had mentioned that he had 2 young children. Bound to be rough on his family having just moved.

Don't apologize Tommi ... I understand.

Wade always talked about how strong his wife is, I got the impression he didn't mean just physically. I really wish I could send her a letter to let her know how much Wade contributed to the board and how much we'll miss him.

It would be nice if we could get a comunication to her and a link to this thread so she could see what an impact he had. Perhaps, not too comforting now but perhaps useful later to show their kids.

I was thinking something similar too... well, I didn't realise we could link this thread, but it sounds like a good idea to me.

Anything to let them know how much Wade was respected here.

This is very, very sad. I always learned something from his thoughtful posts and looked for his name in the threads. It's a shame. I hope we can communicate something to his wife about our feelings for Wade. You do get to know people on this board, and it's a privilege to be able to trade ideas with somone like him.

I have been thinking that one of the best things we could do would be to preserve what Kenuchlover wrote here.

Given the frequent server crashes we have experienced, it needs to get to a peramnent media, either paper or CD/DVD that could be given to the family. If someone had the time and hardware to go back through the archives and make a copy of all the threads that Kenuchelover contributed to it would preserve his thoughts and personality.

The children are fairly young and it would not mean much now but as they get older it could be a very important link to their father.

This is very sad - especially at his age. My thoughts go out to his family.

RE keeping a record, I think that would be a fine idea. I looked through a few posts and there's certainly some valuable information & insights there that his kids may appreciate in the future.

PS Can I apologise to anyone I haven't replied to mid conversation - I work in flat view so it's often possible to miss a reply - I see I didn't reply to one of Wades'.

Also, can I encourage people to put a bio pic/logo or some information up with their posting - it's easy to forget who is who when only the names are on view unless people are very regularly posting.

God, that's so young! Wade will be so missed. What a lovely, thoughtful man he was. Sigh.

I also like the idea of saving his writings on a cd and sending it to his wife.

the following Haida Prayer does his many contributions here some justice IMHO

These are my feelings also. His death is even more shocking and
saddening given his age. I will miss his insights into and
extensive knowledge of Native American history and culture.

I give my deepest condolences to his friends and family for their
loss.

I always wondered who the person who "keneuchelover" was. While everybody else was impressed with his knowledge of Native American History and lore. It was his knowledge of genetics and biology that bowled me over. He was clearly at or near world class level or at the very least very, very gifted in that field. There are no words that can express when somebody that young dies.

I wholeheartedly support gathering all of his writings together perhaps with these condolences and giving them to his family. I guarantee you his children will be grateful for them one of these days. But instead of a CD put them on an acid free paper. Don't forget technology is leaving us in the dust. I have many of my dad's writing on 5 inch floppies and they're almost more inaccessible to me now than Egyptian Heiroglyphics were to pre-rosetta stone scholars.

Wade's death is an immeasurable loss to all his friends and family and it is also a loss for all of us who share in the community of Maat and who benefited from his knowledge.

There are friends we know and meet every day and there are others we only know through cyberspace but their loss is no less felt.

Wade was a uniquely talented individual. He almost always brought a perspective to a discussion that no one else had yet considered. I have only recently completed a composition of my basic theories. He was one of those few people whose opinion I looked forward to, whether he agreed with me or not. I also looked forward to reading any of his work that he may have eventually shared or published. Here is a place where I say thanks to the creators, supporters and maintainers of this board. Without this board, I probably would have never crossed keyboards with Kenuchelover. The best to him and his family.

I thought that I would add this excerpt of a private email from Wade. He was talking to me about death and dying at the time because of a loss I had this last year. I don't know why but it seems appropriate to post it, maybe because it's him telling us his beliefs on death and maybe so his kids know that he's still there looking over them.

Quote:
It feels lonely sometimes knowing that you're alone,
that YOU are now one of the elders (actual, or up &
coming) of the family. But then I find myself talking
to them while outdoors, or when smoothing a blanket
over my sleeping child..... a blanket they'd made.
I'm not formally religious (my wife is Baptist, but
luckily not so rigid as to conflict with what I
learned from my grandmother!), but there are times I
still feel those who have passed. And I tell my
children they needn't be afraid of the dark, not with
their kin looking over them.

I am deeply saddened to hear of this loss
to many Maat members I have always been a bit of a heretic but I found that Kenuchelover always had time for my assertions and was always very patient and understanding in his replies
I am truly sorry to hear that he will no longer be around.
